Youth Basketball Coaching
Whether you are a parent volunteer or a teacher who is considering youth basketball coaching, there are many important points to remember in becoming a youth basketball coach. First and foremost, you must love children. If you love basketball, but are not enthusiastic about being with children you should probably consider another outlet for your hobby. Coaching children and teenagers should center on providing them with positive reinforcement through athletics.
The second tip to remember in youth basketball coaching is to focus on the children and not on the basketball score. Often times, those involved with youth basketball coaching get too concerned with winning. Playing youth basketball can define a child’s formative years, and as a youth basketball coach you are in an important role. Everything that you say and do both on and off the basketball court shows something about your character and has an impact on your team. |
Staying positive and giving encouragement to all basketball players is very important. You must approach the youth basketball team with a positive attitude and a passion for the game. This will instill each team member with a sense of pride and the knowledge that they are part of something special.
The final tip in youth basketball coaching is to give verbal praise to each of your basketball players. The praise you give must be sincere and honest. Look for opportunities to offer positive praise during practices, meetings and before and during games. Some positive praise phrases that you can use include “I knew you could do it”, “I’m proud of you”, “You’re on target” and “You tried hard.”
