Coaching Volleyball

Coaching volleyball can be an exciting opportunity for those who are interested in the sport, and who are interested in teaching others how to play and win.  Most volleyball coaches work with teams instead of individual players, although this is not a hard and fast rule.  What is required of you when you’ve decided that coaching volleyball is something that you may be interested in are an expert knowledge of the game and its rules, good leadership skills, the ability to help players work as a team, and the power to motivate.

If you think that coaching volleyball could be something that you would enjoy, you may want to start with coaching high school volleyball.  High school volleyball rules are more lenient, allowing players a little more leeway when it comes to contact with the ball.  If you are or have been a college or pro volleyball player or have always followed their more stringent guidelines, you may need to read and memorize the rules of high school volleyball so that you can adjust your coaching methods accordingly.  As a high school volleyball coach, you may still wish to instruct your players in the style of volleyball that you are accustomed to, but the players need to be aware that your rules for them and the official rules may differ slightly.

Most people who are coaching volleyball in the college or pro levels are former college or pro players themselves.  Coaching volleyball after you have retired from the sport can be a great way to stay involved in the game and help others benefit from your experience.  Whether coaching volleyball for high school, college, an amateur league, or the pros, the experience can be exciting and rewarding.
