Coaching And Mentoring

Coaching and mentoring young people as well as adults can be a very rewarding experience.  Whether you are teaching a child how to play softball or acting as a mentor to a young aspiring professional, the bond between the coach/mentor and the pupil is the stuff of legends.  Many successful people will say that they owe everything to a helpful mentor, a great coach or an especially caring teacher.  For their parts, coaches and mentors often learn as much from their students as they teach, refining their crafts as they share their wisdom with others.  Many teachers, coaches and mentors swell with pride when they see their young charges succeed.

This is a skill, however.  A special bond between the coach/mentor and the student is not automatic; it must be nurtured and tended for it to grow and blossom.  There are several ways you can ensure that your coaching and mentoring will be beneficial both for you and for your student.  It is not crass to manipulate the situation so that the best possible results are achieved, indeed, some careful planning is necessary.

The first step in coaching and mentoring is to love what you do.  People can sense enthusiasm, and they will know if you are faking or if you don’t really care.  Don’t try to coach someone in an area that you yourself do not love.  Don’t offer to show someone the ropes at your office if you can’t stand to go to work.  Your negative energy will be obvious and it will crush an excited employee.

You also need make sure that there is some chemistry between yourself and your student.  When coaching and mentoring you need to get along well in order to be a good mentor.  A good mentor is someone you can talk to, feel comfortable with and trust.  If the chemistry isn’t there you will have a hard time building an effective bond.
